The transformation you seek begins where most people refuse to look.
In alchemy, the Nigredo is the first stage of the Great Work — the blackening, the putrefaction, the voluntary descent into the material that has been rejected, repressed, and pushed into the dark. It is the most difficult stage because it asks you to move toward precisely what you have spent your life moving away from.
This journal is a structured 30-day practice for that descent.
How It Works
Each day presents a single prompt — not a gratitude exercise, not an affirmation, but a direct question aimed at the material you have been avoiding. The prompts are sequenced to follow the alchemical logic of the Nigredo: they begin with what is visible and work inward toward what has been buried.
- Days 1–10 — The Surface. What you present to the world versus what you hide. The persona and its cost.
- Days 11–20 — The Descent. What was given to you that was never yours. Inherited beliefs, absorbed emotions, adopted identities.
- Days 21–30 — The Prima Materia. The raw material beneath the structure. What remains when the constructed self has been acknowledged and set aside.
What Makes This Different
Most journals ask you to track habits or write about your feelings. This journal asks you to confront the specific material that your habits and feelings are designed to keep you away from.
It is grounded in the Jungian concept of shadow work — the deliberate integration of rejected aspects of the psyche — and structured according to the alchemical stages that the tradition says must precede any genuine transformation.
You will not feel good every day. That is the point. The Nigredo is not comfortable. But it is productive in a way that comfort never is.
Who Should Use This
This journal is for anyone who has read about shadow work and wants a structured, daily practice for doing it. It is for people who are tired of surface-level self-help and ready to engage with the actual material — not the idea of transformation, but the specific, uncomfortable, necessary work of it.
No prior knowledge of alchemy or Jung is required. Each prompt includes enough context to guide the exercise.
