Where the Twelve Come From
These are the twelve operations as they appear in The Magnum Opus, our map of the Great Work in four stages and twelve operations. If the four stages are the seasons of the work, the operations are the days within them: the specific things done to the matter.
Alchemical authors never agreed on a single list. George Ripley’s Compound of Alchymy (1471), for instance, describes the work as twelve gates and names congelation, cibation and exaltation where this list has distillation, fixation and coagulation. Nor are the operations always sequential: several can happen at once, and some return at different stages.
The stage beside each operation shows where it falls on this site’s map of the four stages. The grouping is ours, a reading rather than a rule. As everywhere on the site, the laboratory description comes first and the psychological reading second, and the two should not be confused.
This is a study deck, not a divination tool. The card of the day is chosen by the date, not by chance or by you, and it is not a message about your life. Use it as a question to think with.
Operation 1 · Nigredo
Calcinatio Calcination
In the vessel. A substance is heated in open fire until it is reduced to a dry, white ash. Water and everything volatile is driven off.
In a life. The burning of the self-image’s pretensions. It is usually lived as humiliation: the forced recognition that the picture of yourself was a construction. The fire does not ask permission, and what burns was never solid.
If everything burnable in this situation burned, what would be left?
Operation 2 · Nigredo
Solutio Dissolution
In the vessel. What remains after the fire is immersed in water until it loses its shape. In the images, the king bathes and dissolves.
In a life. Immersion in emotion, memory and the unconscious. It is lived as overwhelm: boundaries you thought were permanent turn out to be soluble, and the water finds every crack.

Operation 3 · Nigredo
Separatio Separation
In the vessel. The dissolved matter is sorted into its components, the heavy from the light. The Emerald Tablet says: separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross.
In a life. Discernment after the flood: true from false, yours from inherited, essential from accidental. Not everything that was dissolved deserves to be put back together.

Operation 4 · Nigredo
Coniunctio Conjunction
In the vessel. The separated elements are joined for the first time. The greater marriage of opposites comes much later in the work.
In a life. A first reunion of what was divided: thought and feeling, strength and tenderness. It is lived as wholeness, however brief, as if two things at war had agreed to a truce.

Operation 5 · Nigredo
Putrefactio Putrefaction
In the vessel. The joined matter is left to rot in a sealed vessel until it turns black. The raven and the tomb are its emblems.
In a life. The necessary decay between one form and the next. Even the improved old form has to die. It is lived as stuckness, the long wait between an ending and a beginning in which nothing seems to happen.

Operation 6 · Albedo
Fermentatio Fermentation
In the vessel. A ferment is added to the decayed matter and quickens it, as leaven raises bread. In the images a green lion devours the sun.
In a life. New life entering what had died. It is lived as unexpected inspiration, energy returning from a direction you did not anticipate: something growing in the soil where something else rotted.

Distillatio Distillation
In the vessel. The liquid is heated until it rises as vapour, condenses and is collected, and the process is repeated, each pass purer than the last.
In a life. Purification by repetition. It is lived as discipline: the willingness to go through the same process again, more carefully, and remove what the first pass missed.

Operation 8 · Albedo
Sublimatio Sublimation
In the vessel. A solid is heated until it rises directly as vapour and settles higher in the vessel, purified. Doves rising are its image.
In a life. Raw instinct raised into a higher form without losing its force: anger into a boundary, desire into direction, hunger into craft. The crude becomes precise.

Operation 9 · Citrinitas
Fixatio Fixation
In the vessel. The volatile is made to stay: a spirit that would fly off in the fire is held in the matter until it no longer escapes.
In a life. A passing insight anchored in lasting structure: a habit, a practice, a commitment that survives your changing moods. The vision becomes a routine, and the routine a life.

Operation 10 · Citrinitas
Coagulatio Coagulation
In the vessel. The matter thickens and sets into a solid body that holds its form. Older texts also call it congelation.
In a life. Spirit and body setting into a durable self. It is lived as arriving at a version of yourself that no longer shifts with every outside pressure. The stone holds.
Where do you now keep your shape under pressure that once would have bent you?
Operation 11 · Rubedo
Multiplicatio Multiplication
In the vessel. The power of the stone is increased by repeating the work upon it, so that a little can act on much.
In a life. Generativity: your change begins to have effects beyond your own life, without effort and without preaching about it.
What would multiply if you simply kept doing it, and stopped announcing it?
Operation 12 · Rubedo
Proiectio Projection
In the vessel. A small amount of the finished stone is cast onto molten base metal, which is transmuted. It is the moment of use, and it comes last.
In a life. The deliberate application of what you have become to the people and situations around you. It is lived as purpose: not assigned from outside, generated from within, and quiet enough to last.
