https://thehermeticschool.org/ — the written work of the School: the twelve operations, the laws, and the practice, each with its primary sources.

There is a sentence running in your head right now that you did not write. It sounds like you, it uses your vocabulary, and it arrives in your own inner voice — which is precisely why it has never been examined. It was installed: by a parent, a teacher, a first employer, a religion you left twenty years ago. And it is still issuing instructions you experience as your own conscience.

The alchemists called the operation that deals with this separatio, and the Emerald Tablet gives it in one line: separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, gently and with great skill. This episode is about that line, including the qualifier that almost everyone ignores — because separation done by force destroys both parts.

It examines the counterfeit now in wide circulation: cutting off people, going no contact, curating the circle. Sometimes necessary, and not the operation. The voice in your head is not the person; it was installed and remains yours to carry whether or not you ever speak to them again. The alchemical separation is performed on the contents, not on the people — which means it is entirely possible to separate your mother's voice from your own while continuing to have lunch with your mother.

The method is winnowing. The winnower does not inspect each grain or decide which piece is chaff; he creates a condition, and the difference in weight performs the separation. The psychological equivalent is a single question, sharper than it looks: whose voice is this in? What surfaces under it falls into three classes — inherited standards, borrowed grief, and absorbed fear. The episode closes with the pathology of over-separation, and the decisive sign that the operation was done correctly: it does not end with everything discarded.

Episode 10 of THE GREAT WORK, a twenty-four part series following the operations of the opus in order, from the nigredo through to the rubedo.

This series walks the four stages. The written work goes underneath them — the twelve operations, one by one, the laws, and the practice, each with the primary sources beneath it.

This channel is no longer monetized. The written work is what funds the research behind every episode.
