Everyone who enters the nigredo tries to shorten it. That is not a moral failing; it is the most reasonable response to a condition with no visible cause and no visible end. The alchemists could watch what happens next. Apply too much fire and the material does not transform faster. It fuses. It hardens into glass, and it will never again be workable.

They had a name for the men who did this: puffers, after the bellows they worked to build the hottest fire possible. The puffer is not lazy. He labours harder than anyone. What defines him is that he wants the result without the operation, on his own schedule.

Four ways of rushing

Premature explanation, telling the process before it can be told, which releases the very pressure doing the work. The geographic cure, the new city or job undertaken while the inner change is unfinished; within a year the same condition reassembles with new furniture. Premature identity, adopting the role of the one who has done the work, which Jung called inflation. And spiritual bypassing, using genuinely valuable material to avoid an unfinished task. If you have been consuming this material for months and nothing in your life has changed, that is worth sitting with.

The water bath

Maria the Jewess, working in Alexandria between the first and third centuries, gave her name to the balneum Mariae, the bain-marie. You do not put the vessel in the fire; you put it in water, and the water in the fire. The heat can never exceed the boiling point. She did not ask the operator to be disciplined. She built an apparatus that made excess impossible.

The instruction that follows is harder than patience. The fire is not reduced; it is kept constant. Constant low heat means continuing the ordinary things at the ordinary time, without the reward that normally makes them worth doing. Getting up, doing the work, keeping the appointments. Constancy without confirmation.

3 Practice

One day

The Sealed Vessel

For one day, do not explain what you are going through to anyone. Answer questions honestly and briefly, and stop there. Each time the urge to explain arrives, notice what it wants: reassurance, agreement, relief.
