There is an industry built on the promise of ego death: courses, practices and substances that will take you to the other side. The alchemists described the operation very differently. They called it mortificatio, and Edward Edinger called it the most negative operation in alchemy.

Putrefactio is passive: something is left in the dark and decomposes. Mortificatio is a killing. There is an agent, and it is never the material itself.

The death of the king

At its centre is the most repeated scene in the corpus: a king dies. He is drowned, beheaded, dissolved, eaten. And he is not wicked. He must die because he rules. The ruling principle of a psyche is whatever has been making the decisions, the standard against which every option is measured. As long as it rules, nothing genuinely new can pass the gate, because the gate is operated by the thing that would be replaced.

Why you cannot do it yourself

Any programme of self-dissolution is designed and supervised by the structure it proposes to end. So the structure survives, now with a prestigious new activity. The three counterfeits share this: renunciation chosen by you, self-punishment in which the ego is both judge and defendant, and the staged humbling selected from a menu. In each, the ego keeps the timetable.

The real operation arrives from outside and is not selected: the public failure you did not see coming, the certainty that proved false in front of people who mattered. The ruling principle is not argued with. It is overruled by events.

Two ways to abort it

The first is to convert the event into injustice: build the case that it was unfair. Grievance keeps a ruler alive. The second is to collapse into self-condemnation: I am a fraud, I always was. That looks like the death, and it is the counterfeit again. The instruction is to let the event remain an event. You are permitted to have been wrong without being a fraud, and wronged without being a victim.

The quiet sign

One day an old inner instruction arrives (you must be useful, you must not fall apart) and there is a pause in which it is audible as an instruction rather than a fact. That pause is the death of the king.

3 Practice

10 min

Let the event be an event

Take one recent humiliation, large or small. Write a single sentence that states what happened, with no case for yourself and none against. Read it. Do not add a second sentence.

4 Write

When something humbles you, which do you reach for first: the case that it was unfair, or the case that you are a fraud?

Write by hand if you can, or somewhere private. Nothing is written or saved on this page.
