The Seven Signs: Process or Wreck?
Signa
This path is educational and contemplative. It is not therapy and it cannot tell a stage of transformation from an illness. If your functioning is impaired, if this has run for months without movement, or if you have any thought of harming yourself, please contact a licensed professional or a crisis line in your country (findahelpline.com).

You cannot see a stage you are inside of. The faculty you would use to identify it is the faculty it is operating on. So the alchemists wrote down external marks, small and unglamorous, that could be checked against the material instead of against the mood of the person watching it.
Their function is narrow: to answer one question. Is this a process, or is this a wreck? The responses are opposite. A process asks to be contained and endured. A wreck asks to be changed or treated.
The seven signs
- The cause is missing. There was no event, and the reasons you find are too small for the weight.
- Rest does not restore it. After a genuine week off, you are rested and the condition is where it was.
- It releases rather than empties. Old material comes up with its original charge.
- Capacity is intact and inert. You could do the work. The reason is missing.
- The future will not form. Not a dark picture: no picture.
- Every account you give is false. Too dramatic or too dismissive.
- Something underneath is not resisting. A thin sense that this needed to happen.
What it is not
Clinical depression overlaps with almost every sign, and it is treatable; this framework treats nothing. Burnout responds to rest, which is a test you can actually run. Grief has an object and makes the future painful rather than blank. And a bad situation, a job or relationship or debt that could be changed, is the most common of all. Interpreting a solvable problem as a spiritual operation is one of the more elegant forms of avoidance.
What knowing is for
Very little, honestly. It does not shorten the stage. It removes one costly error: the belief that the condition is evidence of personal failure. That belief drives the self-condemnation and the frantic repairs, and each of those opens the vessel. Knowing that the blackening is the operation, not the accident, does not make it lighter. It makes it survivable without turning it into a verdict about your character.

The Rest Test
If you do not know whether you are in the nigredo or simply exhausted, take a genuine week of rest: sleep, no obligations, no email. Then observe. If a real rest changes it substantially, you were depleted, and that has a known solution.
4 Write
Go through the seven signs. Which can you actually check, rather than feel? Which of the four look-alikes have you honestly ruled out?
Write by hand if you can, or somewhere private. Nothing is written or saved on this page.
